The 1670 Collection celebrates the rich life and adventures of J. Herbin, an enterprising French sailor of the mid-17th century. He made a number of voyages to India, collecting ingredients and formulas for his sealing wax and inks. He began making pen inks in his Paris workshop beginning in 1700 with the “Ink of Ships” and the “Jewel of Inks.” Today, Herbin inks are widely used and internationally renown.

This colour is an amazing warm brown with a reddish-terracotta tint, great shading (and a golden shimmer), and if you’re using something like Clairefontaine or Tomoe River paper you have the added surprise of a gorgeous highly visible green sheen. It didn’t like the Moleskine (but then most ink doesn’t), but performed beautifully with everything else I tried it on, and was even useable on standard copy paper with a fine/medium nib. I initially tried the ink in sample form, and was so impressed with it that I immediately had to order a full bottle. I don’t even normally like brown inks, but Caroube de Chypre didn’t care.

This is a beautiful red brown with gold shimmer. The ink itself is a good formula that most papers handle well, as long its not a very wet pen – it is also one of the last original wax seal bottles without the sticker that I love.

This ink has the colour of the carob pod, a warm reddish brown. It also has shimmer, which makes it suitable for the wetter nibs. It does not perform well on absorbent paper.
The colour is suitable for formal letters and thank-you notes, one of my speciality pastimes. One of my favourite inks.
