Jacques Herbin 1798 Ink – Amethyste de l’Oural
This J. Herbin ink is specially formulated for use in fountain pens. They are mainly composed of water, humectant to limit drying at the level of the pen and preservatives to preserve their qualities over time. The dyes used have been specially selected to offer rich colour. Finally these inks are finely filtered so as not to clog your fountain pen.

Fantastic ink, with a rich imperial hue. A tad on the pricey side but despite the price J. Herbin keeps me coming back for more.

I was a bit disapointed with this ink. I love most of the Jacques Herbin range but for me this was a bit disappointing. It is a medium wet ink with a pleasant purple shade and some silver shimmer. It does not lay down the shimmer like some of the other 1798 inks like Kyanite du Nepal and colour is not much different from other purples and doesn’t pop for me. That being said – it remains a good quality ink and for people that wants a more subdued shimmer this will be the perfect purple in a medium and even fine nib as there is no clogging.

I’ve tried out several of the J. Herbin shimmer inks, and have been blown away by most of them, but honestly 1798 Urals Amethyst was not what I was expecting. The colour is a very dark purple but it doesn’t appear to have much shading or colour range, and comes across as a bit flat, lacking the usual dimension and vibrancy that I’ve come to expect from J. Herbin inks. The shimmer which is usually so well behaved and highly visible in the rest of the 1798 range is very understated in this ink, to the point that I didn’t immediately notice it. If you’re looking for a more vibrant purple with added shimmer, then I’d recommend trying Diamine’s Purple Pazzazz instead. But of you’re a big fan of purple inks in general, and like your shimmer to be a little more understated, then you’ll probably like Urals Amethyst just fine. Either way, I’d recommend trying it as a sample first, just to be sure.

This is another of Herbin’s shimmer inks, this one being a bit more subdued. I use this ink for thank-you notes, birthday cards. and my journal. It works well with a stub nib, which pours ink on the paper in copious quantities. Being wet, the drying time is affected, but to good effect. Small thin lines do not show the ink’s character that well.

Lovely purple colour. The shimmer is veer discreet so it can be used for “serious” purposes without being questioned. I find it sometimes clogs the pen so I’d recommend it for medium rather than fine nibs.
