Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen 0.5 – Medium
The Platinum Preppy has gained popularity owing to its high writing performance while maintaining a very low price since its Launch. Along with the growing number of fountain pen users, there are more customers enjoying ink colors. This has led Platinum to create the colourful pens which allow you to write with the ink that complement the colour of your pen. The nib made of highly-polished stainless steel, and the mixed metal point that provides excellent abrasi on resistance, make Preppy one of the best quality fountain pens for this price range. It also utilizes the Slip & Seal Mechanism, which prevents the ink from drying out inside the pen even after a year without usage, providing a smooth, consistent writing experience at any time. The Preppy model enhances the joy of writing with a fountain pen. Enjoy it with the ink color of your choice.

I’m only giving the pen two stars because of the wonderful service from Write Gear. The pen itself is a nice pen, the medium is a wonderful medium. only when it actually writes. The pen wrote okay when I first used it and with the platinum ink that came with it. When that ran out, I refilled it with lamy Turquoise (looks amazing in the collector) and it wouldn’t write. cleaning the pen was not a great experience either. The nib comes out with the feedas a unit, but unlike usual feeds, the fins are part of the collector and that doesn’t come out so it took a while to get all the ink out of there. The same with the moisture in the collector/feed. I set the pen asside for an hour to dry out and soon after I could see condensation in the collector (which I assume is the cause of flow issues) and even now, two days later, there is still moisture. Shaking the pen seems to be the only thing that sort of helps and that only sometimes but isn’t something you want to do when you’re meant to be writing. Also note that the feed/collector has trouble keeping up with the Medium.

A revision of my previoous review.
I have now eyefropper converted both my Preppies and they are great!! The issue was that the agitator ball in the cartridge would block the feeder hole in the cartridge and starve the feed. Eyedroppered i have no issues at all. I have yet to write at length with the adapter and an IS converter but I didn’t have any issues when i first ried the set up for a short period.

This is a great value for money pen. The nib on my pen is very smooth (almost too smooth for my liking). It is also very wet.
I find that you can use a Preppy fine with a number of different inks on regular low quality copier paper or exam pads.
In my experience this is not true for the medium nib. I have tried Diamine Turquoise and Royal Blue and both inks feather and bleed badly on cheap paper when used in this pen. This appears more a function of the pens wetness that anything to do with the inks.
When used on decent paper like Rhodia however this pen suffers from none of these issues and it is great to write with.

I recently ordered a Platinum Preppy because of the great reviews it receives online. Mine is the medium nib. Unfortunately, I am not impressed with the pen. The ink flow is very poor and makes for very dry writing. I have also tried converting it to an eyedropper but it has not improved the ink flow, so this is one of my pens that I do not use. The nib is very smooth and if it had better ink flow, I am sure I would be using this all the time.

Possibly the smoothest writer I have used. The feel of the pen is rather plasticky, and it is really cheap, but for what you pay, you get a really smooth-flowing wet writing pen. The nib assembly can easily be put into the Platinum Plaisir, I’m told, which would redeem the plasticky look somewhat.

Purchased these Preppy’s for two reasons – to compare it to a Pilot V-Pen and to eye-dropper them… Definitely smoother than the V-pen I used to compare it to but is nearly double the price of a V-Pen. Eye dropper works well but did get some burping on extended use with the Diamine Shimmertastic Green (thank you writegear for the sample). Either way – the eye dropper converted pen has been lost to other family members – ink with sparkles seems to attract them…

I got a medium nib purely because I prefer the smoothness of it over a fine nib, thought why not give it a try.
Turns out to be a great pen!
I use it for hight volume note taking on legal notepad and 80gsm lined exam pad paper, no hassles.
I converted this pen to an eyedropper for fun and volume as well, nothing wrong with the cartridges though!
I even mixed a shimmering ink with a plain ink (Diamine Shimmertastic Arabian Nights and Parker Quink Blue) for some fun and visual effect on paper, half expecting some feed blockage due to the shimmer particles…
No problems whatsoever.
Not a nib for fine work obviously but a beaut for note taking and general writing.

Nice little budget pen. I enjoy it more than my old Parker. It doesn’t spit all over and I like that it writes first time every time. No difficult starts.
it’s a bit plasticky and I do worry about dropping it, I’m not sure it will hold up for that.
I found the writing to be nice and smooth even on pretty budget paper. On watercolour rough grain though it’s tricky but smooth Fabriano no problems. I use mine with a converter and there have been none of the burping issues other spoke about.
I have 2 in the medium nib and would like to try the fine and xtra fine so really thin lines in my drawing.
Also the price makes it so that if someone puts your pen in their pocket you can live with the loss.
Would I buy another?, Yes definitely. .
