JINHAO 159
I had never heard the name Jinhao until I came across it in some Youtube reviews. Then I learned that these pens, manufactured in China, came in a variety of sizes and colours. I was intrigued by the reviews I watched in respect of the Jinhao 159. They generally commented on its overall appearance and chunky size. Most importantly, it was the poor man’s version of the Mont Blanc 149.
When I saw the prices of Mont Blanc fountain pens, I realised I would have to make do with a Jinhao. Thus, I bought three Jinhao 159’s; one for me, one for my dearly beloved, and one for my daughter.
The 159 is a really big pen. It is attractive in appearance. The pen sits well in my right hand. It writes smoothly, with quite a wet flow of ink. In view of its weight, posting is not possible. The ink is supplied via a converter, which makes bottled ink the option for re-filling. I have been using Parker black with ease. As an aside, I have seen online that Jinhao sells its own branded cartridges.
The Jinhao 159 does not have the classy features of the Mont Blanc 149. The Jinhao is a robust and chunky piece. Do not expect any flexing while you write. The nib is a fixed stainless steel.
What is there for lefties? Don’t they have trouble with fountain pens, and smearing of the left hand over a recently written page? My dearly beloved, a left-hander, has not used a fountain pen in a long time. She has had no problem with the Jinhao. She says it is impractical for quick notes on paper on your lap during a meeting. However, it does well when you are sitting at your desk, relaxed, and not having to rush your writing.
I love my Jinhao 159. I rate it highly. And, I scored a few points for acquiring the pen for my dearly beloved.
